For each model: the best year has the highest Ownership Score, and the worst year has the most owner complaints. A year is flagged to avoid when it has far more complaints or recalls than nearby model years, or far more complaints than similar cars from the same year.
Recall and complaint counts come from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Popular models tend to get more owner reports simply because more are on the road.
