Inspect the car
- Check every panel gap and look for mismatched paint (signs of past accident repair)
- Look at the tires: even wear, matching brands, at least 4/32" tread
- Check under the car and engine bay for oil, coolant or other leaks
- Start the engine cold; listen for knocks, ticks or squeals and watch for smoke
- Test every window, lock, seat, light, the A/C, heat and infotainment
- Test drive on city streets and highway: straight braking, smooth shifts, no pulling
- Ask for the service records and a vehicle history report
- Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (about $100–$200)
Known 2022 BMW X3 problems to check
- Oil filter housing gasket leaks are a recurring issue on the B46/B48 four-cylinder engines and can cost $400-$800 to repair if not caught early
- Transfer case and xDrive all-wheel-drive electronic modules can develop faults, with repairs ranging from $800 to $2,500
- iDrive infotainment software glitches and occasional touchscreen freezes have been reported, though many are resolved via over-the-air updates
- Water pump and thermostat failures are more common after 60,000 miles and typically run $700-$1,200 at an independent shop
- Brake wear is accelerated compared to non-luxury competitors due to softer OEM pads tuned for NVH comfort, expect pad and rotor replacements every 30,000-40,000 miles
