Inspect the car
- Check every panel gap and look for mismatched paint (signs of past accident repair)
- Look at the tires: even wear, matching brands, at least 4/32" tread
- Check under the car and engine bay for oil, coolant or other leaks
- Start the engine cold; listen for knocks, ticks or squeals and watch for smoke
- Test every window, lock, seat, light, the A/C, heat and infotainment
- Test drive on city streets and highway: straight braking, smooth shifts, no pulling
- Ask for the service records and a vehicle history report
- Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (about $100–$200)
Known 2022 BMW 3 Series problems to check
- N20/B46/B48 engine water pump and thermostat failure, often between 60,000-80,000 miles, with replacement costs of $600-$1,200
- High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) issues on the turbocharged 2.0L B48 engine leading to rough idle and hesitation
- Excessive oil consumption reported by some B46/B48 owners, requiring checks every 5,000-7,000 miles between services
- iDrive infotainment and USB/Bluetooth connectivity glitches that often require software updates at the dealer
- Premature tire wear, particularly on M Sport models with wider performance rubber, requiring replacement every 25,000-35,000 miles
