Inspect the car
- Check every panel gap and look for mismatched paint (signs of past accident repair)
- Look at the tires: even wear, matching brands, at least 4/32" tread
- Check under the car and engine bay for oil, coolant or other leaks
- Start the engine cold; listen for knocks, ticks or squeals and watch for smoke
- Test every window, lock, seat, light, the A/C, heat and infotainment
- Test drive on city streets and highway: straight braking, smooth shifts, no pulling
- Ask for the service records and a vehicle history report
- Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (about $100–$200)
Known 2018 BMW X3 problems to check
- Timing chain tensioner wear — a known issue on the N20/N26 2.0T engines that can cause rattling on cold starts and, if ignored, catastrophic engine failure; budget $1,500–$3,000 to address proactively
- Valve cover and oil filter housing gasket leaks are extremely common by 60,000–80,000 miles, often presenting as a burning oil smell; repair runs $400–$800 at an independent shop
- Water pump and thermostat failures are frequent on the N20 engine, typically occurring between 60,000–100,000 miles; parts and labor average $700–$1,200
- Transfer case and rear differential leaks have been reported, particularly on xDrive models with higher mileage; inspect seals carefully during pre-purchase inspection
- iDrive infotainment system and electrical gremlins, including failed NBT head units and USB/Bluetooth connectivity issues, can cost $500–$2,000+ to resolve at a dealer
