Inspect the car
- Check every panel gap and look for mismatched paint (signs of past accident repair)
- Look at the tires: even wear, matching brands, at least 4/32" tread
- Check under the car and engine bay for oil, coolant or other leaks
- Start the engine cold; listen for knocks, ticks or squeals and watch for smoke
- Test every window, lock, seat, light, the A/C, heat and infotainment
- Test drive on city streets and highway: straight braking, smooth shifts, no pulling
- Ask for the service records and a vehicle history report
- Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (about $100–$200)
Known 2018 BMW 3 Series problems to check
- Oil filter housing gasket leaks are common on the N20/B46 four-cylinder engines and can cost $400–$700 to repair if ignored
- High-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) failure on turbocharged engines can cause rough starts and stalling, with repairs running $800–$1,200
- Water pump and thermostat failures typically occur around 60,000–80,000 miles and can run $700–$1,100 at an independent shop
- iDrive infotainment and electronic module glitches can trigger warning lights and require costly dealer diagnostics at $150–$200/hour
- Tire wear is accelerated due to staggered fitment and run-flat tires, which cost $250–$400 each and need replacement more often than conventional tires
