Inspect the car

  • Check every panel gap and look for mismatched paint (signs of past accident repair)
  • Look at the tires: even wear, matching brands, at least 4/32" tread
  • Check under the car and engine bay for oil, coolant or other leaks
  • Start the engine cold; listen for knocks, ticks or squeals and watch for smoke
  • Test every window, lock, seat, light, the A/C, heat and infotainment
  • Test drive on city streets and highway: straight braking, smooth shifts, no pulling
  • Ask for the service records and a vehicle history report
  • Have an independent mechanic do a pre-purchase inspection (about $100–$200)

Known 2018 Acura MDX problems to check

  • Torque converter shudder on 9-speed ZDX-era transmission (2017-2020 MDX) — a known TSB issue that can require fluid flush or torque converter replacement around 60,000-80,000 miles
  • Infotainment dual-screen setup (pre-2019 facelift) is frequently criticized and prone to unresponsive touch inputs; aftermarket integration is limited
  • Mild oil consumption between changes — some owners report up to 1 quart per 3,000 miles on the 3.5L V6, worth monitoring with a pre-purchase inspection
  • Third-row seat and power tailgate strut wear is common after 70,000 miles, with replacement costs running $200-$400 at a shop
  • Front brake wear is accelerated due to vehicle weight — budget for pad and rotor replacements every 35,000-45,000 miles at roughly $350-$550 per axle

  • Be ready to walk away; another listing is usually a click away
